How to cold call contractors and trade businesses

The owner is often on a roof, under a sink or driving between jobs. Your call has to earn its interruption fast.

Who this is for

For anyone selling to trade and home-service businesses: roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, flooring, landscaping and similar. This is the buyer Coach Selly plays by default, so it is the most realistic practice we offer.

What these calls are like

The owner is working

Many trade owners answer their own phone between jobs. Short, plain calls fit their day; long pitches do not.

They value straight talk

Plain language, a clear reason and honest limits go further than polished sales language.

Partners often share decisions

In many family-run firms, a partner or spouse handles the office and the money. Expect “I need to talk to my wife” or “my partner does that”.

Seasons matter

Busy seasons mean no time to talk; quiet seasons mean attention to cost. Ask about their year.

The moments that decide the call

  1. Check it is a good moment

If they are mid-job, ask when to call back rather than pushing through.

    Example line

“Sounds like you’re on site. Is later this afternoon better?”

  2. The plain reason

One sentence about a problem trade owners recognise, then a question.

    Example line

“I’m calling roofers about the calls they miss while they’re up on a roof. Does that happen to you?”

  3. Their numbers

What a job is worth and how many they lose. Owners know these figures.

    Example line

“What’s an average job worth to you?”

  4. Include the partner

If someone else decides, book a time when both can talk.

    Example line

“Would it be easier to go through it with both of you, say Thursday evening?”

Styles that fit

Coach asks for your selling style before each call. These suit this kind of call:

  • Direct Close

Straight talk and a clear ask suit owners who have little time.

  • Permission & Disqualify

Naming the cold call and offering the exit fits owners who dislike being sold to.

  • Calm Authority

A level, unhurried tone stands out from the pushy calls they usually get.

Set up a practice call

The settings in Coach that make the practice buyer match this role’s calls:

Industry focus
Enter the trade you call: roofing, plumbing, HVAC, flooring. Leave it blank for a random trade.
Difficulty
5 to 7. Trade owners push back honestly.
Buyer temperament
Hard-nosed, for owners with no patience for warmth.
Your selling style
Direct Close or Permission & Disqualify.

Three reps

  1. Rep 1: the good-moment check

Practise recognising a busy owner and booking a better time in under twenty seconds.

  2. Rep 2: their numbers

Get the owner to tell you what a job is worth and how many they lose. Use only those numbers afterwards.

  3. Rep 3: the partner

When the owner mentions a partner, book a time with both, and ask what the partner will want to know.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Sales jargon

“Leverage”, “solutions” and “synergy” sound like every other unwanted call.

  • Ignoring that they are working

Pushing through while they are on a job guarantees a no.

  • Inventing their numbers

Use the job value and volume they give you, never an estimate you made up.

  • Going around the partner

If the partner runs the money, a deal without them will not hold.

Questions

When is the best time to call contractors?

Ask them. Many answer early in the morning or at the end of the day, but every business is different. If they are on a job, book a better time.

How do I get past “I’m too busy”?

Don’t get past it; respect it. Ask when would be better and call then, with a reason.

Why do contractors hang up on sales calls?

They get a lot of them, often while working. A plain reason in the first sentence and a quick, honest exit make them less likely to.

Can I practise cold calling contractors with AI?

Yes. Coach Selly plays a trade business owner by default, and you can set the trade under Industry focus.
