The anatomy of a good opener

  1. Who you are

Your name and company, said plainly. Hiding who you are makes everything after it sound suspicious.

  2. One relevant reason

A problem common to the buyer’s role or business, in the words they would use. Not a description of your product.

  3. A small question

Something easy to answer: whether the problem comes up for them, or how they handle it today. Not “would you like a demo?”.

  4. A pause

Stop talking. Your next line should follow their answer, not your script.

The three structures

Permission first names the cold call and offers an exit, the approach behind Permission & Disqualify. Straight to the reason is the shortest, and suits busy buyers and Direct Close. Question-led opens with curiosity about how they work, as in Question-Led Discovery.

What the checker looks for

  • Jargon, such as “solutions” or “leverage”, which sounds like every other sales call.
  • Claims, such as guarantees or percentages, which a stranger has no reason to believe in the first ten seconds, and which must be true if you use them at all.
  • A problem that takes more than ten or so words to say.
  • “How are you today?” in place of a reason.

It cannot tell whether your opener is relevant to the person you call. Only saying it out loud to a buyer can.

After the first line

The opener earns the next thirty seconds. What decides the call is how you handle what comes back: a brush-off, a question, or “send me an email”. The objection library covers the replies you are most likely to hear, and the cold call openings guide goes deeper on the first minute.

Questions

What makes a good cold call opener?

Your name and company, one plain reason for calling that is relevant to the buyer, and a small question. Then stop and let them answer.

Should I ask “how are you today?”

It is not wrong, but it does not tell a stranger why you called. Most buyers decide in the first few seconds, so lead with the reason.

Does this tool use AI?

No. It fills in three proven structures with your words and checks for jargon, claims and length, all in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

How do I make the opener sound natural?

Say it out loud, many times, until it sounds like you. Practising it against a buyer who pushes back, such as Coach Selly, shows you what happens after the first line.

Now say it to someone who pushes back

Run your opener against Coach Selly, hear the brush-off, and practise what comes next.
